My sculptural work has been a continuing exploration of how I perceive
myself and others and the struggles we engage in. I have always been
particularly drawn towards subjects that our culture tends to want to
avoid. Some of these are grief, as a necessary expression for individual
and global growth, alienation and belonging, meaningfulness, and personal authority. For instance, my piece “The Bird in Her Throat Awoke,” speaks
to the importance of finding the key to free our voice from a caged
existence in order to develop our own personal authority. Often we
forget that we ourselves hold that key.

Inspiration for my work is derived from personal experience. I work
intuitively, deeply enjoying the mysterious process of discovering what
wants to come through me. Each one of a kind sculpture is handbuilt,
primarily with coils. Approaching the surface of my figures like a canvas,
I paint on oxides, stains and underglazes, sometimes accenting with
acrylics and lustre glazes. I often bring in additional mediums, such as
glass, metal and wood, or inscribe poems or text directly onto the clay, in order to further the story being told.
